Chris VandeVelde of the Oklahoma City Barons became just the second player in AHL playoff history to score overtime game-winners in back-to-back games, and the first to do so since 1983. The Barons have now won three consecutive overtime games and with a three to one series lead, they are one victory away from taking on the Toronto Marlies and Matt Frattin in the AHL's Western Conference Finals.
VandeVelde displayed a lot of patience with the puck on each of his overtime goals, waiting out San Antonio goaltender Jacob Markstrom before finding an opening and exploiting it. Markstrom, by the way, is one of the top prospects in the Florida Panther organization.
In his postgame interview VandeVelde was asked when he last scored an OT game-winner and whether he'd ever done it in consecutive games. He said he didn't recall, but I believe his previous OT game-winner came during his sophomore season at North Dakota when he scored in the extra session against Minnesota-Duluth.
